| "Robert - I would just like to help and give encouragement to anyone who is struggling. Five years ago a hernia repair failed 12 months after it had been fixed. The consultant and I agreed a further op should wait until an imminent house move was completed.I then read an article by someone who had carefully tended his hernia until it had repaired itself and I resolved to try that too. I had long reasoned that, given the chance, a stomach muscle should repair like any other. The problem is keeping the hernia "reduced" for long enough. I'm sure the extent of the hernia must be relevant too so getting started straight away was important.
I tried a number of hernia supports - both pants and appliances - and settled for Hernia Pants as they give good support, look like normal pants and are comfortable enough to wear all the time, including at night in the early stages. I had also read that easy regular bowel movements were essential in avoiding strain. A spoonful of psyllium husks on breakfast cereal achieves that and I used a small pad of toilet paper to provide support over the hernia site during bowel movements too.
Our house move was to a retirement village (I am 82) where I started going to pilates classes. Much of what we do improves core strength as well as improving balance and flexibility and imparts a great general feeling of wellbeing. I'm sure it has helped keep the hernia away since it repaired.
I cannot remember exactly when my hernia disappeared - sometime around 18 months after the move I think. I haven't been back to the consultant - I had gone privately and don't want to pay to be told I am better. But I know I am. I am still careful - it becomes instinctive - especially lifting and twisting which I'm sure played a part in getting it in the first place. Vigilance - don't break your own rules - it only takes once to set you back e.g. prolonged coughing or sneezing - and patience." Mr Caws UK | June

"The pants are just what I wanted, relieving the discomfort I felt when the double hernia I inherited from my father's side of the family started to bulge when I was 70. They are comfortable to wear for long periods, I forget I am wearing them. I wore them for 32 hours straight travelling from UK to Hong Kong, and I regularly wear them to the gym.
